Britain Made Barbour: Spring Summer Mens 2020 Drop

J Barbour & Sons was established in 1894 in the bustling northern market city of South Shields.

The Barbour & Sons brand quickly became international, as by 1908 pre World War 1 Malcolm Barbour produced the first mail-order catalogue. This very modern move eventually grew to account for 75% of the business by 1917. This rapid evolution of the brand allowed Barbour to be sold overseas more easily and was regularly shipping international orders as far away as Chile, South Africa and Hong Kong.

By 1934 the style of Barbour's clothing was evolving and expanding. Duncan Barbour, (the founder's son) was a keen and passionate motor cycleist, which inspired him to develop a bespoke motorcycle range for the brand. This new biker style became so popular it was almost a revolution and soon almost every British international team member from 1936 to 1977.

In 1939 Duncan Barbour was called away to war, and the running of the business was left to his father Malcolm and his wife Nancy. This led to another action based adaptation of the brand, where they came up h the ‘Ursula Suit’ which was developed for the Submarine Service. Barbours Ursula suit was named after the U-class submarine, Ursula whos commander (Captain George Philips) was an influential voice in getting the suits produced and commissioned.

In 1974 Barbour received their first Royal Warrant from the HRH Duke of Edinburgh otherwise known as Prince Philipp. The brand then received its second royal warrant by her majesty Queen Elizabeth in 1987.

Since then J Barbour and Sons have enlisted with many different country, fashion and motor collaborations such as with Landrover, The Newcastle Falcons Rugby Team, and Alexa Chung.
